Are Electromagnetic field (EMF) Shields Effective?

Many of us wonder whether electromagnetic shields are effective. Even though many EMF shields claim to be 100 percent efficient, the key lies in combining protective procedures and equipment. You will also need to select the appropriate equipment for the type of radiation source, as we can see from the NIH’s testing of radiation shields for mobile phones. “These findings show that small shields are ineffective in limiting the exposure of the head to RF radiation produced by a mobile phone.” We live in a world where there are a plethora of innovations accessible to assist us in completing time-consuming and difficult jobs. The combination of these gadgets in our houses leads the house to be flooded with radiation. To protect yourself, you’ll need to invest in effective EMF shields and preventive measures.
In this article, we will discuss,

What is EMF

EMF, or electromagnetic field, is a field generated by a body that has a current flowing through it. Both natural and human-made sources can emit electromagnetic fields. Natural electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are caused by the sun, the earth, and the human body, but these EMFs are not harmful to the human body since they emit low-frequency radiation. On the other hand, artificial EMF is generated by manufactured devices such as MRI scanners, cell phone towers, powerlines, televisions, microwaves, and other wireless devices. You should be mindful of the potential harm they pose to your health and be prepared to protect yourself from the harmful radiation emitted by appliances at home or work.

What are EMF shields?

EMF shields are anti-radiation devices that shield you from harmful EMFs emitted by your home and office appliances. Electromagnetic shielding reduces the electromagnetic field in a room by blocking it with barriers made of conductive or magnetic materials.

The common type of EMF shielding materials

  • Pre – tin-plated steel:-Tinplate is made up of steel sheets that have been coated with a thin layer of tin. Pre–tin steel is an excellent choice for applications requiring a low-cost solution that operates best in the lower GHz range. The permeability of this steel is in the low hundreds, which guarantees low-frequency magnetic shielding. Steel that has been tin-plated is excellent protection against corrosion and rust.
  •
  • Carbon steel:- This shielding material is ideal for shielding at lower frequencies. Carbon steel has low-frequency shielding characteristics that other metals do not. This includes corrosion and rust resistance.
  •
  • Copper(copper alloy 770):- Since copper absorbs radio and magnetic waves, it is pretty effective at blocking radiofrequency radiation. Copper alloy 770 is a copper, nickel, and zinc alloy used in EMF shielding applications for its corrosion resistance while blocking radio and microwave radiation completely.
  •
  • Aluminum:- Radiofrequency waves can be blocked with aluminum foil. Since aluminum is a conductor, it creates a barrier known as a Faraday Cage that completely blocks radio waves. It is still an excellent alternative for a variety of applications. As compared to copper, aluminum has approximately 60% conductivity; however, using this metal requires precision.
Metals like copper and aluminum are good at shielding against EMF radiation, but they do not absorb it. You’re only safe if the metal is between you and the source of the radiation.

Are EMF shields effective?

Many scientists and media outlets speculate on the efficacy of EMF shielding. The reality is that no EMF shield can completely protect you from radiation if you do not also employ precautionary measures. Some EMF shields, such as phone cases, perform better than others in terms of detecting and reducing exposures. However, according to the National Center for Health Research, these shields, EMF shields, have not been clinically proven to reduce radiation exposure. Nonetheless, many people have reported substantial improvements in their health after focusing on removing EMFs from their surroundings, such as more energy, reduced tiredness, and fewer headaches.
EMF blockers are available in various ways online, including phone cases, stickers, jewellery, necklaces, home ornaments, crystals, Gems, moonstones and even clothing fabrics.
There are plenty of items on the market that claim to block up to 100% of electromagnetic radiation or radiofrequency (RF) from your devices. According to a real-world evaluation, to determine how much these everyday items such as blankets and phone cases would block EMF, the reported results are very tricky.
When testing an RF blocking mobile phone case, the covers had to face you, covering your phone screen at all times, including when you were on the phone call. Other types of phone cases claim to steer mobile phone radiation away from the consumer. The real-world testing reported that all of the cases significantly reduced RF emissions from the phone’s face, with the flip case reducing RF by up to 90% when used correctly. However, depending on the phone network and the location of the events, some of them increased exposure doubling it by interfering with a signal.
According to experts, another source of concern is that these items behave differently outside of the research facility. A Verizon iPhone blocked more RF in the same place than an AT&T mobile phone did. It’s probably because of the different directions facing or proximity to the nearest cell tower. In addition to that, several items designed to be worn on the body have also been checked. The garment shielding items, including a scarf, boxers, and tank tops purchased on Amazon, blocked around 80 to 95 percent of cell phone RF.
In most situations, the shield can minimize the exposure when used correctly, but it can also increase it in the right conditions.
Experts recommend effective alternative ways to reduce EMF exposures like
  • Purchasing an EMF detector to assess the workplace and home appliances
  • Checking electronics and metallic gadgets in your home that are conductors, whether they have high EMF reading.
  • Shield these conductors with EMF blockers, like metal screens, metal foams, phone, tablet and laptop cases, EMF blocking fabrics and paints.
  • Turn off the WiFi router when you don’t need to use them.
  • Put your phone far away from you when you are sleeping.
  • Put your cell phone on airplane mode when you are not actively using it.
  • Turn off the Bluetooth connection when you are not using them.
  • Use wired headsets instead of wireless ones.
  • Don’t carry your phone close to you all the time.
  • Keep your distance from cellphone towers
  • Use microwave radiation shielding devices.
  • Having shorter phone calls
Radiation from products we regularly use, such as smartphones and laptops, is a source of concern for possible health risks. According to the FCC, no empirical evidence exists that provides a definitive connection between wireless device use and cancer or other illnesses. However, it is still essential to take the necessary steps to live a happy and safe life.
